Northern Myanmar
Welcome to the untamed north of Myanmar! While this area of the country has seen much less influence from the international community and from the modern world due to its remote location, there are plenty of exciting adventures to be had in this mountainous and wild region. While traveling in the north, one must remember that due to residual political tension, much of this vast region is off limits to foreigners. However, that being said, there are plenty of beautiful treks and delightful cruises along the Irrawaddy River that will leave ample time for guests to mingle with the local hill tribes and those that live in the villages along the river. The culture and tradition in this area of the country has retained a great deal of authenticity over the years and will undoubtedly provide a unique and exciting experience for all travellers passing through.
Putao
Putao is the northernmost town of the Kachin State in Myanmar. Though it can only be reached overland during the summer season, it is accessible by air all year round. While there are not many attractions to speak of in Putao, the surrounding landscapes, wildlife, plant life, and birdlife will leave visitors with plenty to do. There are plenty of opportunities for white water rafting, hiking, adventure skiing, and mountaineering in this area, though travelers should know that this area is only accessible by those traveling with a guided tour group. The highest peak in Southeast Asia, Hkakabo Razi, is located in this region, though it is only recommended for very experienced hikers. This is also the only region in Southeast Asia with snowfall. While it can be difficult and relatively expensive to travel to Putao, it will, without a doubt, provide guests with a once in a lifetime experience.
Myitkyina

Like Putao, there are not many touristic sites in the city, but Myitkyina is still manages to provide an engaging and captivating experience for guests. The city is incredibly multicultural, acting as home to Kachin, Lisu, Chinese, and Burmese people. The residents of this small city are always eager to interact with tourists and to practice their English. So, while it may not be the best place to see famous sites, it will provide you with a cultural experience that you cannot find anywhere else in the world.
Katha
The small port-city of Katha was made famous by George Orwell’s book, Burmese Days. Riverboat tours will often stop for a break in Katha and there is also a railroad that runs through the city to Mandalay if guests are eager to see the countryside from a slow-moving train. Katha is also an excellent place to come to book a cruise along the Irrawaddy River as there are many ticket offices catering specifically to these trips.
