Northeast Thailand (Isaan)
Northeast Thailand (Isaan)
The Northeast tabeland of Thailand is called Isaan and is known for its incredibly hot temperatures. The name Isaan, refers to the Hindu god of death. The region is home to nearly one third of the country’s population, although it is the least visited and the poorest area of Thailand. Farming is the traditional way of life in Isaan. However, the soil is not ideal due to the high temperatures and the lack of rain in the region. The government attempted to introduce new crops to the region to stimulate the economy in the 1960s but their plan backfired leaving the local farmers deep in debt. This has caused a huge influx of economic refugees from Isaan to move to Bangkok, where these northeasterners now largely make up the city’s lowest-paid work force.
Many travelers are quoted as saying that the major cities in the region can be rather chaotic and tiring without much to offer visitors other than places to stay or transportation hubs. However, all of this does not mean that the region should be missed! Isaan is famous for its Khmer ruins as well as the amazing Khao Yai National Park. The rural region is also rich in culture and hosts a number of festivals unique to this particular area of Thailand.
Attractions
Phimai
The Phimai historical park is home to the most important Khmer temple in Thailand. The temple is comparable to the world famous Angkor Wat in Siem Reap, Cambodia and is built in the same style, it also marks one end of the ancient Khmer highway.
Khao Phra Viharn
This protected area is home to many ancient Khmer ruins. It borders Cambodia and the largely disputed temple of Preah Vihear (a UNESCO world heritage site). When Thailand and Cambodia are at peace with one another, it is often possible to cross the border and visit the ruins on the Cambodian side as well for a small additional price.
Khao Yai National Park
Khao Yai is a massive National Park in the northeast of Thailand that covers more than 2,000 square km of land. Declared a UNESCO world heritage site, the park is home to many different kinds of wildlife, plant life, and bird life as well as hosting several different ecosystems full of thriving flora and fauna.
Phnom Rung
Phnom Rung is another ancient Khmer temple complex located on the edge of a volcano in the northeastern region of Thailand. The temple is a Hindu shrine, symbolizing Mount Kailash where the Hindu god Shiva is believed to reside. The complex lies in the Isan region of Thailand near the country’s border with its neighbor, Cambodia.
